The Story Around the Corner

Story by Anton Adianto | Photo by Bagus Tri Laksono & Wismilak Doc.

Surabaya is an old harbour town that has been long famous, even before colonial times, as seen in the carved copper plates of Trowulan I, which date to 1358, and in the Nagarakretagama manuscript that was written in 1365. Considering its long history, there’s no wonder that Surabaya has been graced by dozens of historical buildings in all corners of the city. One of such iconic building is Grha Wismilak, standing gracefully at the corner of one of Surabaya’s busiest intersections, with a new extension bearing a touch of colonial architecture that replicates the glory of old.

Securing the National Treasure

Story by Solichin Gunawan & Anton Adianto | Photo by Solichin Gunawan & Atelier 6 Interior Doc.

One of Bank of Indonesia’s missions is to conserve a piece of history and national treasure in the fields of architecture and culture by restoring and reusing the Headquarters of the Bank of Indonesia in the Jakarta’s Old Town as a museum. This idea sprouted from the hope that the building would act as a catalyst in the process of revamping the Old Town area into a historical site that can play an important part in the city’s life. In addition to playing a big part in the history of Jakarta, the building is also expected to beautify the face and fortifies the identity and character of the capital, which are getting more and more obscure amidst the uniformity found in the development of today’s cities.

The Ethnic Revival

Story by Anton Adianto | Photo by Bagus Tri Laksono & Architect’s Collection

Combining two different cultures into a single design plan is no easy task, but do it right and the result is breathtaking. Take for example the headquarters of Gouw Architects. The workspace features a harmonious blend of an Eastern-influenced ethnic theme and a modern, Western inspired design concept. By offering a unique working atmosphere in an unassuming location, the workspace triggers the creativity of its occupants, an imaginably crucial thing for architects at work.

Story by Anton Adianto | Photo by Bagus Tri Laksono

Looming tall in the heart of Jakarta’s business district, only a stone’s throw away from Jembatan Semanggi, the AIA Office building has quickly become one of the most recognisable landmarks in the area. Occupying 11 floors of the building and bearing spectacular signage, especially when lit up at night, the office fit out flaunts an interior that aptly represents the strength and ambition of a modern international brand while also embracing the true meaning of life through an innovative design concept.
