Beyond the Future

In many cinematic features that showcase a futuristic setting, the future is commonly depicted as something bleak and full of ruins. In these films, this condition most frequently occurs because of great catastrophic events that somehow manage to wipe out almost all of humankind. The cataclysms are displayed superbly in two of the latest sci-fi flicks, After Earth, starring Will Smith and his son Jaden, and Elysium, a film directed by South African director Neill Blomkamp.
