A House on the Hill

Story by Anton Adianto | Photo by Hearst Castle/CA State Parks/V. Garagliano

The tale began in 1865 when George Hearst bought 40,000 acres of land with the intention of turning it into a ranch. In 1919 when media magnate William Randolph Hearst inherited the land, it had expanded to six times its original size. Younger Hearst had a dream of creating a private retreat called “La Cuesta Encantada”, which translates into “The Enchanted Hill”. Over 30 years later, in 1947, the majestic mansion which is located near San Simeon, California, showcasing the Spanish Colonial Revival style was finally completed. Dubbed Hearst Castle, the luxurious villa estate has now been turned into a California State Park and is listed as one of the ten most expensive homes ever built.
